「まだ。明日、金曜に決まるの」葵は答えた。春は空いたカップを持ったまま聞いていた。「候補に入ってるだけ。お祝いって言われて、言い直せなくて」「今、そのままみんなに送れば？」「明日まで待ちたい。決まる前から、だめだった時の話をしたくない」春は少し黙ってから、「結果が出たら教えて」と言った。
その夜、土曜の予定もそろった。恵美とリンからは「行ける」とが来た。蓮と、そのルームメイトのサムからは「早く」と届いた。春も六時に仕事が終わり、その後は店長が店に出ると教えてくれた。
葵は店長に確認し、チャットに送った。『六人、十八時半でよ。食事と飲み物は、いつもどおりでね。手作りケーキ一台のもいいって』
『じゃあ、ケーキは俺が作る』と蓮。サムも返した。『うちのオーブン使っていいよ。一緒にやろう』葵は『楽しみにしてる』と送った。それは、すぐに書ける本当のだった。
金曜、上司に呼ばれた。「今回は、にお願いすることになった」理由の説明が続いたが、葵の頭には、六人分の予約と手作りケーキが浮かんでいた。
「わかりました。教えていただいて、ありがとうございます」そう答える声だけは、いつもどおりに出た。席に戻ると、昨日のチャットがスマホに残っていた。『』の下に、自分のもあった。
