本を見ていた客が、コートの布に触れた。「着てみてもいいですか」「どうぞ」恵美はハンガーから外して渡した。客は腕を通すと、一番上のボタンだけを留めた。下を開けたまま、肩から小さな鞄をかける。恵美は伸ばしかけた手を止めた。自分なら、上は開けて、真ん中のボタンを。そのほうが腰の形がきれいに見えると思っていた。「写真、撮ってもらえますか」客がスマホを。恵美は少し下がり、全身が入るように構えた。画面で見ると、歩くたびに開く裾が、鞄の丸い形に合っていた。客は写真を、横に立つにも見せた。「この着方、変ですかね」恵美は写真から目を上げ、のコートをもう一度見た。「動くと、きれいです」口にしてから、動いた時の形を自分はあまり見ていなかったと気づいた。「これ、いただきます」客が三千円を出した。恵美は受け取り、値札を外す。袋を用意しかけると、「着て帰ります」と言われた。コートは次の店の前で立ち止まり、そのあと人の間に見えなくなった。「袋、一枚余ったね」葵が言った。恵美が袋をいる間に、葵は空いた所へ本を並べた。さっきコートを置いた場所には、もう別の色のがある。恵美は空のハンガーを台の下にしまった。「次は蓮の番だね」恵美が言うと、蓮は胸の値札に触れた。「……そうだな」

One expression · てはじめて · a new realization
Study example, not a story quote: 客が着ている姿を見てはじめて、恵美はコートの別のよさに気づいた。
The experience leads to a first realization. Seeing the coat worn differently helps Emi notice an appeal she had missed. This reviews てはじめて in a different situation from hearing about Sam’s drawing. Word review: リュックを背負う（せおう） means carrying a backpack on your back, unlike a bag on one shoulder.
