蓮が台の下の袋をまとめていると、客に声をかけられた。「そのジャケット、まだ売ってますか」胸の値札が、前へ。二千円。朝から一度も書き直していない。「千五百円なら、買いたいんですが」蓮は袖口を見た。所は、手を伸ばしても。今日はほとんど一日、これを着ていた。売るために持ってきた。手間をかけて直したところも、見てもらいたかった。客は今、ちゃんとジャケットを見ている。さっきのズボンの話とは違う。「少し、お待ちください」脱ぐためにボタンへ手をかけたが、そのまま止まった。明日、仕事へ行く時にも着たい。急にそう思った。「すみません。これ、売るのをやめます」「あ、そうですか」客は手を下ろし、隣の台へ移った。蓮は値札を外し、ポケットへ入れた。サムが空いた箱を。「千五百円だったね」「うん」「僕のリュックと同じ」「うん」サムがジャケットを見た。蓮は袖を引っ張るのをやめた。「まだ着たいんだよ、これ」「売れたら困る物は置かない、だっけ」「置いてない。着てる」サムは箱を一つ差し出した。「両手、空いてる？」蓮は袖口を一度折り、箱を受け取った。空の箱なら、片手でも持てた。「帰る前に、に寄っていい？」サムが駅のほうを指した。「いいよ。箱は持ってる」リュックを売ってまで欲しかったスケッチブックだ。蓮も、どんな物か見てみたかった。

A customer wanting the jacket does not mean Ren must sell it. The example rejects that automatic conclusion, without denying the customer’s interest. Word review: 参加費を引く（さんかひをひく） means to subtract the participation fee. 肩ひもの長さを調整する（ちょうせいする） means to adjust the straps to fit the wearer; it does not mean repairing a broken strap.
