蓮はジャケットを着て、台の横に立った。ハンガーにかけたままより、形が分かるはずだ。みると、直したも悪くない。二千円の値札が胸の前で。「どう？」「似合うよ」恵美が言った。「そうじゃなくて、売れそう？」「着てる人が気に入ってるのは分かる」蓮は一歩前に出た。通りかかった客が立ち止まり、服を上から下まで見た。「後ろも見てもいいですか」「もちろんです」ゆっくり回る。昨日、糸の端を切り直しておいてよかった。客はのあたりを見て、うなずいた。「そのズボン、おいくらですか」蓮は下を見た。今日着てきた、自分のズボンだった。「こっちですか」「はい。ポケットの形がよくて」台の下の袋を思い出した。は入っていただろうか。袋の口に手をところで、恵美に名前を呼ばれた。「蓮」「……は、上だけです」客は「ああ、そうなんですね」と笑って、隣の店へ行った。葵が百円玉を缶に入れる音がした。蓮が一周している間に、また本が売れていた。「ズボンの札も、作っとく？」「帰れなくなるから」蓮は椅子に座りかけ、やめた。せっかく着たのだから、もう少し立っていよう。二千円の札を、ジャケットのボタンの横へ移した。今度は、何の値段か間違えられない。隣では、客がサムのリュックを。蓮は自分の二千円の札を見た。先に売れるのは、どちらだろう。

A + からといって rejects an automatic conclusion from A. Wearing the jacket to display it does not mean a customer will buy that jacket. Here わけではない means “it does not mean that”. Word review: 申し込む（もうしこむ） is applying to take part; 受信する（じゅしんする） is receiving the reply, not sending it. 正式な申込み（せいしきなもうしこみ） means a formal application.
