The name on the reservation · From 二階の余白 (Room Upstairs)

This earlier story shows the reading format: a Japanese scene, vocabulary help, a grammar note, and questions. The new series follows six friends in Kichijoji; preview their first week here. In this sample, an editor’s plans for a lively evening meet a print-shop owner’s wish for quiet. This issue is an editorial draft; reading time has not yet been tested.

Read the scene

直が二階の予約表1を開くと、土曜日の午後六時に、知らない予約が一件入っていた。

「宮原、一名」

階段の下に向かって呼ぶと、印刷店の店主、容子が顔を出した。

「それ、私」

「お客さんですか」

「一応、お金も払うつもりだけど」

この部屋の持ち主にそう言われると、直は料金表を閉じるしかなかった。

土曜の夜を誰でも使える体験会2にしようと決めたものの、申し込みはまだなかった。だから最初の一人はありがたい。ただ、その一人が毎日ここにいる人だとは思っていなかった。

「容子さんなら、予約しなくても」

「予約しないと、いつでも空いてる人になるでしょう」

容子は窓際3の椅子に座った。机の上には、写真家の律が置いていった箱が二つあった。容子は箱を動かさず、その間に自分の手帳を置いた。

「一階じゃだめなんですか」

「店にいると、閉めた後でも仕事を頼まれるの」

直はうなずいた。自分も昨日、閉店後4に名刺5の印刷を頼んだばかりだった。

「では、お一人様。お飲み物は」

「お湯でいいです」

二人で笑ったあと、容子は手帳に六時と書いた。

「一時間だけ、静かにしていられれば」

直のパソコンには、作りかけの案内が開いていた。

『お菓子を食べながら、みんなで話す夜。六時から』

直は、その一行を画面の下へ隠した。

「体験会にしようと決めたものの、申し込みはまだなかった」

“Although she had decided to hold a trial evening, no one had signed up yet.” Plain form + ものの connects an acknowledged fact with a contrasting result. Here it contrasts making a plan with attracting participants.

  2. 「練習したものの、うまく話せなかった。」話した結果は、期待どおりでしたか。

The clue is her explanation about being asked to work even after closing. Paying is her way of making the reservation count; she has not forgotten that she owns the room.

2. いいえ。練習したのに、うまく話せませんでした。

The second clause contrasts with the hoped-for result of practice.
